About
A few weeks ago I was sitting in beautiful AT&T Park watching the San Francisco Giants add yet another disappointing loss to what has been a season to forget. No homers for Barry. No strikeouts for Zito. Nothin’. Through all this strife, it became obvious to me that the Giants need a gimmick. They need something to make fans happy once Barry finishes his trek for 755. After pondering for a while, it came to me: let’s play one more game at Candlestick Park. Sure, our new home is probably the most beautiful venue in America. But what does a nice view from the park mean when you see nothing beautiful inside the park (ahem, the Giants)?
The Giants are a team steeped in tradition. Whether it be Willie Mays’ catch, Bobby Thomson’s shot or the ‘89 earthquake, we are a fan base that relishes its past. We take pride in the past accomplishments of our boys in Orange and Black because, quite frankly, there’s not much to cheer about right now. One accomplishment that we Giants are most proud of, however, is the fact that our team played in probably the worst baseball stadium ever from 1960 to 1999. You know what I’m talking about: the wind, the cold, the seagulls. Needless to say, our humble abode for 39 years wasn’t very popular.
AT&T Park is, seemingly, perfect. This perfection has, in my mind, made the stadium somewhat boring. Long gone are the days of batting cages being thrown 60 ft. by the wind. Forever lost are Major Leaguers putting clauses in their contracts prohibiting owners from trading them to the Giants as a result of The ‘Stick. Through all this negative press, however, lives an almost iconic view of the stadium. Candlestick Park was our crummy stadium. It was the epitome of the home-field advantage. As much as you hated sitting in sub-zero temperatures, you loved getting a Croix-de-Candlestick pin. Face it, one cannot think of the San Francisco Giants without memories of Candlestick.
Thus my mission: to convince the Giants ownership to play one last game at Candlestick within the near future. Why, you ask? Why not?
